Marvel Studios Gamble Paid Off
MCU gambled on casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark due to actor's checkered past. He was more likely to appear in tabloids than in theaters.
IRON MAN (2008)
Even after his checkered past Kevin Feige and Director Jon Favreau saw something in him and Robert accepted a low salary of $500K, with cut of back-end profits as high as 8%.
IRON MAN 2 (2010)
Downey established himself as a mainstay in MCU after Iron Man 2, rumored to earn $10M, plus another sweet back-end deal. Iron Man 2 grossed over $623M internationally.
MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS (2012)
The $10M became Downye's base salary for next several films after 'Avengers'. Due to the immense success of the film, back-end deals ended up bringing Downey's haul upto $50M.
IRON MAN 3 (2013)
Downey's $10 million salary/$50 million total phase continued for Iron Man 3. The movie was the highest-grossing Iron Man film, with a 1.2 billion dollar haul.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (2015)
Age of Ultron earned an estimated $1.4 billion, making it the lowest-grossing of the Avengers films. However, estimates put Downey's earnings as somewhere between $50 to $80 million.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016)
Civil War grossed over $1.15 Billion, Downey made approx. $50 Million, plus profit-sharing, back-end and a $5 million bonus puts his haul just a little shy of $64 million.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (2017)
The movie grossed over $880 Million across the globe & Downey made a million for every minute he was in the movie, putting his earnings on the film between $10 to $15 million.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018)
Infinity War, which Downey had helped launch with the success of Iron Man. The film ended up earning more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office, netting Downey at least $75 million.
AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)
Downey's last MCU paycheck earned him around $75 million, with the rumored 8% back-end deal earning him an extra $55 million for this film alone.
