Pootie Tang Movie Review

“Pootie Tang” is not bad so much as inexplicable.

You watch in puzzlement: How did that subway wreck happen? How was this film constructed together from such ill-fitting pieces? Who believed it was funny? Who believed it was finished? For that matter, was it closed? Take away the continuous opening titles and end credits, and it’s about 70 minutes long.

The editor’s notes say it comes “from the comedy laboratory of HBO’s Emmy Award-winning `Chris Rock Show.’ ” It’s like one of those lab tests where the room smells like marsh gas and all the rats are gone.

Lance Crouther leads as Pootie Tang, a state star who has attained immense fame, even though no one can get a word he says.

He crusades upon the evil Lecter Corp., which sells cigarettes, booze, drugs, and fast food to children. Pootie is a consistent character on “The Chris Rock Show” and has a following, but he’s more adapted to parodies than to a fiction film–or at least to this fiction film, which is disorganized, senseless, and chaotic.

Personalities perform and disappear without a pattern. Pootie has comic scenes, as when he evades bullets, and additional scenes, as when a lady eats a pie off his face, that seems left in the show by chance.

His hidden weaponry is his daddy’s belt, which he uses upon sinners. His daddy (Chris Rock) gave it to him on his deathbed, after being mangled by a gorilla at the steel plant.

When the belt is abducted by an evil lady named Ireenie (Jennifer Coolidge), he misses his powers but is backed by a good lady named Biggie Shorty (Wanda Sykes, who provides more character than the movie earns).

Biggie Shorty is a hooker but pays most of her time boogying on street edges and supporting Pootie Tang. She has a farm in Mississippi she lends Pootie, who throughout his recuperation there is backed by the white sheriff to date his daughter.

This heads in the way of a shotgun wedding, until the story twist diffuses, and Pootie ends up in bed with Biggie.

There is another villain named Dirty Dee (Reg E. Cathey) who is very dirty, and a villain, Dick Lecter, played by Robert Vaughn as if he may have a touch of lockjaw. Bob Costas acts as an interviewer in one of those terrible jobs where the authors thought it was funny just that he was in the movie, rather than giving him anything funny to do.

Material this silly might at least be the rash show for kids, but “Pootie Tang” for no big idea carries a lot of languages it has no requirement for.

The workshops put tremendous stress on the MPAA to award PG-13 ratings to what once would have been R-rated stuff, and the MPAA serves.

Here is talk your MPAA rated PG-13: “You can’t hurt a ‘ho with a belt. They like it.” Ladies are routinely portrayed as bitches and hit around a lot (so are men).

I have no enigma with street style in movies with a use for the language. But why use it gratuitously in a show that has no requirement for it, with a lead character whose TV appearance will attract more youthful viewers? What’s the point? Anyway, I’m not so much angry as confused.

Fans will come out hurting their heads. The movie is half-baked, a miserable job of work.

There are glimmers of good stuff: a song video in the closing titles, some good songs on the soundtrack,

Lance Crouther heroically giving Pootie Tang an interesting character, even though the film gives him no help. This film is not in a releasable condition.
