Dr. Frank Kameny is widely recognized as one of the most famous figures of the United States LGBTQ rights act. On Wednesday, Google acknowledged the American astronomer, veteran, and gay rights activist, with a Doodle glorifying Pride Month.
In 1971, Kameny became the first readily gay candidate for the US Congress when he ran in the District of Columbia’s first election for a non-voting Congressional representative. After his failure, Kameny and his campaign organization created the Gay and Lesbian Alliance of Washington, DC, an association that continues to lobby the state and press the case for equal rights.
June is here and that means that Pride Month has begun. To honor, the Google Doodle for Tuesday was of LGBTQ+ rights activist Franklin Edward Kameny, who was well-known for his activism and for challenging a dismissal from the US army.

Who was Frank Kameny and what did he do?
Born in New York City in 1925, Kameny worked in the US Army in World War II and later retreated to the military in later life to work for the US Army Map Service, having received degrees in physics and astronomy.
When his employment was eliminated, essentially because he was gay, Kameny challenged the US state in the supreme court. Although that was denied, he then dedicated his life to activism and never held a paid job again.
He was included in putting unitedly some of the first gay rights aid groups in the USA, while some credit him as being the very first to hold an LGBTQ+ rights rally. In 1971, Kameny was the first readily gay candidate for the United States Congress, although he lost that race.
